We are looking for an outstanding research leader to come to this world-leading university to direct the internationally-renowned Rees Centre for Research in Fostering & Education. This vacancy arises from the retirement of Professor Judy Sebba from the Directorship of the Centre in March 2018. It is hoped that there will be a handover period before that date. This is a fixed term externally funded post for five years initially.

The Rees Centre for Research in Fostering & Education was set up in 2012 with funding from the international children’s services provider, Core Assets but has since been awarded over £2.5m in research grants from elsewhere including The Economic and Social Research Council, Nuffield Foundation and Department of Education. It has been built on a strong foundation of using and developing evidence-based methods to improve outcomes for looked after children worldwide. The Centre has had a powerful impact on practitioners and policy makers, thereby improving children’s lives and future prospects. Its practice and policy oriented reviews and new research are extensively quoted in national and local government guidance and are implemented by practitioners across the country.

The Director’s post will comprise, amongst other duties, leading the Research Centre, securing research funding and leading research commissioned by external agencies. They will undertake dissemination and knowledge exchange activities internationally, nationally and locally and contribute to the Department’s strong research profile in future research assessment exercises. They will develop and lead the centre’s research strategy and promote inter-disciplinary research, write funding applications and generate significant research income. They will also lead the Timpson-Foundation funded Research Programme in schools on attachment awareness and the effects of trauma’. The postholder will also contribute to teaching and supervision. The successful candidate will be offered a one year Senior Fellowship of Green Templeton College, which may be extended. The post will be based at the Department of Education in Norham Gardens, Oxford.

The successful candidate will be a recognised international researcher who provides intellectual leadership in the field of children’s social care and education. They will hold a DPhil in a relevant subject and will be a leading authority in social scientific research in the field of children’s social care and education with an outstanding international reputation for research. They will have an outstanding publication record as first author in prestigious international journals, a successful track record of attracting and managing significant research income and an excellent reputation in teaching and academic supervision in the area of children’s social care and education.
